Olivet Sports Round-Up: Sunday, March 24 - Saturday, March 30

BASEBALL:

Sunday, March 24 

The University of Olivet at Ohio Wesleyan

Game 1:

The Comets dropped game one 6-10. The Comets did put up a fight in the top of the fifth inning putting up five runs, with help from Senior Gabriel Kirck, Sophomore Braden Abbott, Junior Mason Cook, Junior Blake Hawkins, and Freshman Jack Friesen all recording RBIs. Sophomore Charlie Quillium recorded the loss for the Comets.

Game Leaders:

  • Senior Matthew Fennell went 3-5 and scored twice

  • Abbott went 2-5 with 2 RBI’s

  • Freshman Austin Alfen went 3-4 

  • Hawkins went 3-5 with 1 RBI

Game 2:

Game two of the series resulted in a 2-8 loss. The Comets recorded six total hits and three errors in the field. Junior Andrew Vendzuh pitched five innings for the Comets giving up only two earned runs. The loss was handed to Sophomore Antonio Biggs after pitching 2.1 innings and giving up three earned runs. 

Game Leaders:

  • Abbott went 2-4

  • Friesen went 1-3 with 1 RBI

  • Hawkins went 1-3 with 1 RBI

Friday, March 29 

The University of Olivet at Calvin 

Game 1:

The men's baseball team got run out of the game 2-12 in seven innings. The Comets' sole scoring came off a Hawkins 2-run blast in the top of the sixth inning. Senior Keegan Kuha recorded the loss for the Comets tossing five innings only recording two earned runs. 

Game Leaders:

  • Abbott went 2-3 

  • Hawkins went 1-3 with a HR

  • Friesen went 2-3

Game 2:

A close second game resulted in a 5-7 loss for the Comets. The Comets were shut out through 5 innings and then put together two consecutive two-run innings. The late push wasn’t enough to top Calvin. Sophomore Bryan Carney recorded the loss for the Comets on the bump. He pitched six innings only recording three earned runs and five strikeouts. 

Game Leaders:

  • Sophomore Mikey Kuzara went 2-3 with 1 RBI

  • Kirck went 1-4 with a walk and scored twice

Saturday, March 30

The University of Olivet vs Calvin

Game 3:

The Comets rolled home for game 3 of the series against conference opponent Calvin. The Comets came out strong putting up 4 runs in the first two innings with the help of Kircks 2 RBI double in the first inning. Unfortunately, the Comets couldn’t hang on and lost 7-14. Braden Abbott recorded the loss for the Comets, pitching 2.1 innings and giving up 4 earned runs. 

Game Leaders:

  • Fennell went 3-4 and scored a run 

  • Kirck went 2-4 with 3 RBIs 

The baseball team will look to bounce back on Tuesday, April 2 as they face off against conference opponent Albion at home. Then they will begin a 3-game series vs conference opponent Adrian. Comets will be home on Friday, April 5. Then travel to Adrian on Saturday, April 6 for a doubleheader.


MEN'S TENNIS:

Sunday, March 24 

The University of Olivet at Illinois College

Men's tennis fell to Illinois College 3-6. The only doubles victory came from Sophomore Ryan Ganger and Freshman Austin Whitney. The other two wins came from five singles Ganger who won 7-5, 6-1, and six singles Whitney who won 6-3, 6-0.

Men's tennis is set to travel to conference opponent Alma on Wednesday, April 3. Then face Albion at home on Saturday, April 6.


WOMEN'S TENNIS:

Sunday, March 24

The University of Olivet at Illinois College

The Comets got downed 1-8. The sole victory came out of the two singles position, Freshman Jordan West took home the win 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Rylee Lewis came up short, losing a close three-set matchup in the 1 singles position. 

Women's tennis has a couple of conference matchups this week. Starting on Tuesday, April 2 at Alma. Then at home on Friday, April 5 against Albion.


SOFTBALL:

Monday, March 25

The University of Olivet VS Grace Christian

Game 1:

The Comets softball team rolled over Grace Christian 11-3 in five innings. The Comets put up three runs in inning one and three runs in inning two and never looked back. The Comets were led by Senior Meredith Morell and Sophomore Mattie Akom, who recorded two RBIs. Freshman Michelle Michelin recorded the win for the Comets on the mound. 

Game Leaders:

  • Morell went 2-3 with 2 RBIs and scored twice 

  • Akom went 3-3 with 2 RBIs and scored twice

Game 2:

The team put up a fight but ultimately lost 7-10. The Comets put up three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the lead to three with the help of Freshman Alexis Bond’s two-RBI single. Sophomore Izzy Abalos recorded the loss on the mound for the Comets after pitching three innings and giving up four earned runs. 

Game Leaders: 

  • Freshman Zola Smith went 2-4 with 2 RBIs and scored 

  • Bond went 3-4 with 2 RBIs and scored


Thursday, March 28

The University of Olivet at Bluffton (Ohio)

Game 1:

The Comets lost game one 5-10. The Comets never got in a groove, scoring two in the first and not scoring again until the fifth inning. The hot start two-run first inning was boosted by Morells single, scoring Freshman Kaitlyn Witowski. Michelin recorded the loss for the Comets, only pitching 1.2 innings and recording five earned runs. 

Game Leaders:

  • Morell went 3-4 with 1 RBI and scored

  • Freshman Morgan Rachnow went 1-3 with 1 RBI

Game 2:

A low-scoring game two, the Comets lose 1-6 the sole run coming in the top of the seventh inning. That run was thanks to Michelins RBI double, scoring Senior Maddie Bailey. Abalos recorded the loss for the Comets; she pitched 5.2 innings only recording three earned runs. 

Game Leaders:

  • Witowski went 2-4 at the plate 

  • Michelin went 2-3 with 1 RBI 

The softball team has a couple of doubleheaders this week. Starting on Tuesday, April 2 at Manchester. Then the comets will travel to conference opponent Hope on Saturday, April 6.


MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD:

Friday, March 29

Alma College Triangular

Men's Track and Field rolled into Alma College and claimed second place. The Comets totaled 136 points beating out Alma, and falling behind Albion who totaled 159 points. 

Event Leaders:

  • Senior Jordon Brown placed first in the long jump as well as the 200-meter dash

  • Senior Chris Davis took home the win in the mile run as well as the 5,000-meter run

  • Sophomore Dontal Wright won the 400-meter run 

  • Freshman Owen Fremeau took home the discus throw and the hammer throw

  • Freshman Keegan Nutt placed first in the pole vault 

  • Junior Jackson Arkles took first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase 

  • The Comets 4x400-meter relay team of Brown, Wright, sophomore Jonathan Holloway, and freshman Kyle Redd placed first.

The comets will begin to prepare for their home Olivet Triangular on Saturday, April 6 as Cleary and Adrian will be coming to town.


WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD:

Friday, March 29

Alma College Triangular

Women's Track and Field put up a fight yet fell short placing third with a team total of 101 points. The Comets fell behind first-place Alma with 127 points and second-place Albion with 123 points.

Event Leaders:

The comets will also be preparing for their home Olivet Triangular.


MEN’S GOLF:

Saturday, March 30

Baldwin Wallace Invitational

The Comets headed into Ohio and shot a team total of 359 and found themselves in fourth place out of four teams. The Comets were led by Freshman Brady Applegate who shot an 83 (+11) and wound up tied for 7 out of 30 golfers. 

Other Scores:

The men's golf team will have no events this week.


WOMEN'S GOLF:

Friday, March 29

The 2024 Trine University Spring Classic 

The Women's Golf team ended up shooting a team total of 353 strokes earning the Comets 11 place out of 16 teams. The Comets were led by Junior Rylee Honsowitz who shot a +9 earning her a tie for 8th out of 95 golfers.

Other Scores:  

The women's golf team will be heading out of town for the two-day Monmouth Fighting Scots Spring Invitational. Golf will begin on Saturday, April 6 at 1 p.m. and conclude Sunday afternoon.


MEN’S VOLLEYBALL:

Friday, March 29 

The University of Olivet at Trine

The Comets lose in straights to the Thunder. They lost, 9-25, 15-25, and 14-25. The Comets were no match for the Thunder in this MIAA matchup. 

Game Leaders:

Saturday, March 30

The University of Olivet at Calvin

The Comets met up with conference opponent Calvin and couldn’t get the job done. The Comets lost in four sets 1-3. The Comets came out strong and took the first set, but Calvin didn’t look back after that. 

Game Leaders:

  • Senior Deontay Thomas recorded 10 kills 

  • Dickerson recorded 9 kills 

  • Mensching recorded 21 digs 

  • Haynes recorded 12 digs

The men's Volleyball team will head back home for their next matchup on Friday, April 5 against Wabash. The match is set to start at 7 p.m.
