OLIVET, MICHIGAN– The Assistant Professor in the Department of Foundational Medical Studies, Assoc. Dean for Diversity & Inclusion & Community Engagement, Oakland University, Tonya Bailey, was a guest speaker at The University of Olivet's MLK Luncheon. Bailey said, "Dr. King understood that while it may not be possible to help everyone, making a difference for one person still matters. OLIVET, MICHIGAN– Eric Thomas, guest speaker, said "Dr. King's love and commitment were so deep that, like Christ, he was willing to lay down his life to create freedom for others. He literally had to die so that others could live—so that laws could change, lifestyles could improve, and access to freedom could grow."

OLIVET, MICHIGAN– Dustin Byrd, professor of humanities at The University of Olivet and guest speaker at the Luncheon, said, "Despite all our diversity—racial, ethnic, religious, and philosophical—we are one people...Dr. King directly confronted the brutal legacy of white supremacy in America. He challenged a system that was vicious and deeply rooted. And he did it by reminding us of our ideals and holding us accountable to them."

OLIVET, MICHIGAN– "I celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. because it's important to remember the past, how far we've come, but how far we still have to go. Having friends and family in today's political climate, it's important to focus on things and treating everybody with respect and honor and understanding that we still need to make sure that these things are relevant so that we don't repeat our past" said Jake Schuler, assistant dean of student life and residential experience.

OLIVET, MICHIGAN– "Ways that we continue to represent love on MLK is by serving. He talks about everybody can be great because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a degree to serve. You don't have to know Aristotle or Plato to serve. You just have to have a heart. full of grace and a soul generated by love. And I think if we judge less, we forgive, we recognize people for the content of their character as opposed to the color of their skin, their economic status, their political preference. It is simply to serve, love your mankind, help others. You cannot do a greater good than to help others. And so I think that's how we definitely represent Dr. Rutherford King Jr." said Joshua Gillespie, dean of student life.
