Another Disney Remake: lacks while also gives

October 4, 2019

Another Disney classic has been given a remake. “The Lion King” is a story that takes people on a journey with a lion cub named Simba. It follows through his early life such as when loses his father, Mufasa, and is essentially driven away by his uncle, Scar. The movie also shows stories of friendships and relationships, like when Simba grows up with Timon and Pumbaa and when he eventually has Nala by his side, again all while battling with his own identity. Eventually, he returns home to reclaim his rightful spot as king.

This adaption directed by Jon Favreau uses the same storyline that many people have held to their hearts or have told to each generation. The film has quite the cast of well-known stars. Adult Simba is voiced by Donald Glover, Nala is voiced by Beyoncé, King Mufasa is voiced by James Earl Jones, Timon is voiced by Billy Eichner, and Pumbaa is voiced by Seth Rogen. Expectations were pretty high given the cast list.

Although the CGI was beautiful, the film lacked a certain level of the heart of the movie. With CGI, there are limitations to what can be show on screen. Specifically, this remake focuses less on certain emotions and details in the original in order to make the animals more realistic.

One thing about the movie that was good was the soundtrack. It once again stuck to original parts and sung classics such as “Can you Feel the Love Tonight” and “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King”.  The melodies and the songs do different with each person as they should. The singers and actors themselves make sure to make each song they have their own.

One other really good thing about the film was the relationship between Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen. Their roles as Timon and Pumbaa were exceptionally delightful, playing to different comic conventions, making jokes about one another, and even about Simba when he was little. They got along beautifully, and the chemistry in this film seemed genuine, realistic, and original. Overall, the film had both hits and misses in regards to it being a remake, but it is worth giving a shot.

The original “The Lion King” came out in 1994. Out of the voice actors of this film, James Earl Jones was the only one who reprised his role for the 2019 remake. Elton John is also credited for songs in both films.

“The Lion King” is also a Broadway musical that premiered in 1997. There are also spin-off movies and television shows based on the original animated movie.

“The Lion King” is still out in select theatres and is rated PG.
