Olivet Sports Round-Up: January 28 - February 3
University of Olivet
Bowling
The Comet Bowling teams competed a total of three times last week, with the men’s team traveling twice and the women’s team traveling once.
On the men’s side, the team finished 13th at the AHBA Championships in Monroe, Michigan, and took 4th later in the week in Jackson, Michigan at the Scotty Classic.
The women’s team took 2nd at the Scotty Classic in Jaxon, Michigan in their only competition of the week.
Neither team has any further competitions scheduled.
Men’s Basketball
The Men’s Basketball team saw action twice this week, finishing 1-1 between its two games.
The team started its week on Wednesday, January 31 at home against Adrian where the Comets suffered an overtime loss of 74 – 69 to the Bulldogs.
For Olivet, Senior Noah Wiswary scored 17 points and dished out 6 assists while Freshman Conner Schipper had a record-setting night with an 11-point, 25-rebound, and 10-block triple-double. Both Schipper’s 25 rebounds and 10 blocks were all-time single-game highs for the men’s program.
The Comets finished the week on Saturday, February 3 at home against rival Albion College, securing a 64 – 56 victory over the Britons. Schipper led the Comets in scoring with 21 points and added 16 rebounds to his line, while Freshman Nathan Richardson contributed 14 points of his own to the win.
The Comets now sit at 3-18 (1-9) on the season. The team will compete twice next week, traveling to Calvin University on February 7 and hosting Trine University on February 10.
Women’s Basketball
The Women’s Basketball team played twice over the course of the week, finishing with a 1-1 record.
In the first game of the week, Olivet traveled to Adrian College on Wednesday, January 31 and defeated the Bulldogs by a final score of 62 – 44. Junior Clara Shoales led Olivet in scoring with 12 points, and Freshman Christina Malackanich scored 9 points and secured 6 rebounds in the win.
To finish the week, the Comets suffered a 65 – 48 loss at home to Albion College on Saturday, February 3. Senior Lilly Connelly scored 11 points and recorded 5 assists, while Malackanich scored 10 points for Olivet.
Olivet is now 8-14 (5-8) on the year. The Comets will host Saint Mary’s College (Ind.) on Wednesday, February 7.
Men’s Volleyball
The Comet’s Men’s Volleyball team finished the week with a 0-4 record, competing both at home against Aquinas College and in De Pere, Wisconsin at the St. Norbert Invitational.
Olivet started the week at home on Thursday, February 1 against Aquinas College, where the Comets lost in four sets. Senior Kai Hartman recorded 12 kills, and Quinn Dickerson led both teams with 6 total blocks on the night.
The Comets then traveled to De Pere, Wisconsin to compete in the St. Norbert Invitational. Through the first day, Saturday, February 3, Olivet holds a 0-3 record with losses to Augustana (3 sets), St. Norbert (5 sets), and Wisconsin-Stevens Point (4 sets). Dickerson leads the Comets with 36 total kills so far through the weekend.
The Comets finish play in Wisconsin on Sunday, February 4 before traveling to Ohio on Saturday, February 10.
Wrestling
The Olivet Wrestling team traveled to Albion College to face the Britons in their only competition of the week, where the team took a 29-7 loss.
The Comets were able to secure two individual wins on the night, a 6-4 victory from Tyler
Herrema and a 12-0 victory from Donovan King.
The next competition for Olivet will be on Thursday, February 8, when they host Adrian College.
Swim & Dive
Both the men’s and women’s teams traveled to Albion on Saturday, February 3 to face the Britons.
For the men, the Comets lost by a final of 134 – 62, and saw top performances from Sophomore Matthew Brown (1,000-yard Freestyle), Senior Dylan Lyons (100-yard Backstroke), Freshman Logan Weicht (100-yard Butterfly), and Junior Treyton Gabrielson (200-yard Freestyle) who all secured second-place finishes.
For the women’s team, Olivet took the loss by a final score of 155 – 83. The Comet’s top performers were Senior Jennifer Mann who finished first in the 200-yard Freestyle, the 200-yard Backstroke, and the 500-yard Freestyle, and Sophomore Bridgette Shroll who won both the 1,000-yard Freestyle and 1,000-yard Breaststroke.
Up next, the Comets will travel to the Holland Aquatic Center to compete at the 2024 MIAA Swimming and Diving Championship on Wednesday-Saturday, February 21-24.
Clay Target Team
The University of Olivet Clay Target Team earned the “Classic All-Around Champions” title for its overall performance in Brooks, Kentucky at the ACUI Eastern Conference Championship on Sunday, January 28.
Olivet High School
Boy’s Varsity Basketball
The OHS boys basketball team hosted Pennfield High School on Tuesday, January 30, and defeated the Panthers by a score of 65-44. The team then played Lansing Sexton at home on Friday, February 2, and fell 64-61 after a potential game-tying shot by the Eagles at the end of regulation was waved off.
Next week, Olivet will travel to Fowlerville on Monday, February 5, and host Iona High School at home on Friday, February 9.
Girl’s Varsity Basketball
The OHG girl’s basketball team traveled to Pennfield on Tuesday, January 30 where they defeated the Panthers 33-18. The Eagles then went on to beat Lansing Sexton at home on Friday, February 2.
The Girl’s team gets the start of the week off before playing back-to-back days later in the week, hosting Iona High School on Friday, February 9, and traveling to Springport on Saturday, February 10
