Gamma Iota Sigma Holding "Risky Run" Virtual 5K

Virtual runs are no longer unique in the running world. Thanks to COVID-19, they are more popular than ever. Getouttheremaga.com logged more than 30 runs last May alone.

Runningusa.org found in a survey that 26% of runners participated in a virtual run in 2019. 2020 figures are not yet available.

Virtual runs or races are coordinated by participants (one or a small group), said active.com, and run any (safe) space runners choose. Usually, these runs are health centered, but the Runningusa.org survey found that 28% of participants ran to help raise money for a cause.

There have been virtual runs here at Olivet College. The Student Veterans Advocate group advertised one last semester. Now, Gamma Iota Sigma has joined the pack.

The fraternity for risk manager, insurance and actuarial science students is hosting a “Risky Run” Virtual 5k, the week of April 12-18.

The group is joining 11 states, including Hawaii, and one other chapter (Northwood University) in Michigan, to raise money for local chapters.

Registration is a www.riskyrun.com. Fees start at $25, with options for a medal, T-shirt and larger donations.

For information locally, contact Allyson Sears, fundraising officer for Gamma Iota Sigma at asears@oivetcollege.edu.
