Before I started college, if someone would have told me that I would have pledged a Greek house, I probably would have laughed in their face. I had absolutely no interest in Greek life because of the reputation that Greeks get across the country. I thought that it had nothing to offer me.
Once on campus, I learned really quickly that I couldn’t have been more wrong. I ended up going to several houses my freshmen year, and each one had its own quirks that made me feel welcome. They took the time to get to know me, and slowly changed my preconceived notions on what Greek life is. I came to realize how involved the Greeks really are on campus. They helped me with my academics, they were in clubs I was interested in, and they were there for me when I was having a rough time. Greek life at Olivet College has caused me to step out of my comfort zone and grow as a person.
In my opinion, being a part of Greek life is definitely worth it. You get a support system when you’re away from home to help during rough times. You are able to get opportunities to develop skills that you wouldn’t usually get in other organizations, such as building relationships that could last well into the future. The most important thing about Greek life in my opinion is that you become a part of a family.
Understandably, Greek life is not for everyone, but I encourage others to keep an open mind. If I hadn’t put myself out there and tried something new, I would have missed out on a great opportunity of becoming a better me and growing with a house full of others that I’m proud to call my family.
Pledging started Friday, Jan. 19 and is happening until Sunday, Feb. 4. This is a time where students will join one of the Greek houses of their choice and create life long relationships with their new brothers and sisters.
