Olivet ITS (Information Technology Services) is cautioning students and staff once again to watch what they open and engage with on Facebook.
Just recently, a phishing email (an attempt to obtain account information by posing as a legitimate company, through emails, text messages or phone calls) email appeared with President Steven Corey’s name as the “sender”.
And, ITS warns, with tax time upon us, there is an uptick in phishing and spear phishing email activities. They caution if you are unsure about the email, take a time to check with ITS first before taking an action.
More ITS tips:
Don’t click on email links that you do not recognize: If you are asked to sign in to your account, type the website that you know is correct into your internet browser.
Learn to identify phish bait: Understand what to look for to uncover an email scam. Here are some common giveaways:
Subject line is ‘urgent’ or requires ‘immediate action.’ Fraudsters want you to act without thinking.
Sender name looks familiar with an email address other than olivetcollege.edu or odd or unfamiliar
The greeting is not personalized with your name. Why trust someone who doesn’t know your name?
Misspellings and grammatical errors, including British English spellings, links that look modified or unusual Attachments: Never open an email attachment you didn’t request, they may contain viruses or malware.
Also, ITS has recently added the following feature on outside emails: Disclaimer: CAUTION: This email originated from outside of Olivet College. Do not click links or open attachments unless you verify the sender and know the content is safe.
