"What better way to end seminar for the semester than serving others?"

That’s what senior Taylor Gorr, a journalism and mass communication thought, as she arranged a service morning for her peers at The Haven in Battle Creek.

She and eight of her classmates, under the direction of Professor Arthur Williams, spent the Nov. 18 morning cleaning and organizing the boutique area of the facility, which serves the homeless of the city. The boutique offers clothing appropriate for job interviews for the Haven’s clients.

Vicki Mellino was another senior journalism and mass communication student who participated in the service trip. "I was unsure about what to expect, but I came away humbled by the experience and proud of the work we were able to accomplish in under two hours. We converted a chaotic, dusty room of clothes, shoes, and accessories into a more organized and clean space. I hope volunteering at The Haven is a tradition the JMC seminar will continue every semester," Mellino said.

Administrators of The Haven of Rest Rescue Mission were quick to offer their appreciation and the encouragement of further volunteerism for its clients, who are offered food, counseling, shelter and rest to a clientele which includes men, women, veterans, and more.

“It was amazing what we could accomplish in just a morning. The before and after conditions were obvious. Everyone pitched in and got it done,” said Williams.
