Comets cite exciting concert scenes

With summer right around the corner, college students are looking forward to activities summer has to offer. One large attraction for a college student is concerts.

Junior Amber Hamad said, “My favorite thing to do in the summer is go see concerts; it is a great time to see your favorite artists live.”

Ranging from hip-hop to country, Olivet College students have seen a variety of different genres live and in concert. For some it is the small things that make a concert special. When asked, Freshman Madeline Maxwell said, “Coldplay, because they walked out through the aisles, so it was nice to see them up close for someone who didn’t get super close tickets.”

For others it is the experience of going to a concert that makes it memorable. “I had saved for the Beyoncé concert for over a year. With the money I bought a front row seat and was able to touch her in person. Nothing will top that experience for me; it was the best concert I have ever been to,” Hamad said.

Some students prefer music festivals including Coachella (Indio, California), or Lollapalooza (Chicago, Illinois). These festivals allow you to see multiple artists all in one location. Junior Janette Fisher got the chance to go to Coachella music festival in California last summer. “I saw so many different artists and was front row for Lana del Rey. It was beautiful scenery with lots of food and stuff to do,” Fisher said.

Professor Dustin Byrd was not only able to see some pretty cool concerts in his time, but also to meet an artist before her concert. “I saw Regina Spektor in Chicago at a venue called Martyr’s. It was very intimate and personal concert,” Byrd said. “I got to hang out with her before the show; we got sushi together.”

Many school offer a summer concert for their students at the end of the year. Olivet is one of few that do not offer this to their students. “We would have to increase the visibility of the arts among the students on campus first,” Byrd said. “We would need things like cafes and open mic nights.”
