Being grateful for life

If someone in your family has passed you know how hard of a time it is. I am appaled by the number of people who have lied about such a thing. I know of at least two people who have lied about the passing of one of their parents. Not only is this a lie but what does this do to the faimly member that is still alive. If I told my friends my father passed why wouldn't they believe me...because people lie about this!!!

Ethics of Academic Dishonesty

Not one student was dismissed for failure to comply with the academic honesty policy last year. Whew. We must be more ethical than the rest of America because most sources show that between 75 and 98 percent of America’s high school and college students have cheated in one way or another.

Justice and the Olivet College Code of Conduct

The Olivet College Code of Conduct states that to make students more socially and individually responsible they place emphasis on leadership but at the same time they include disciplinary actions to, “hold students accountable to the standards of the community”. The standards they list are: respect for oneself, respect for others, respect of property, and honesty and integrity. I believe that the code of conduct is meant to act as distributive justice, fair treatment for all, but I think it comes off as a procedural form of justice.

Who has to follow the rules?

City ordinance in Olivet states that you must be quiet until 9am. Durring pledging, as well as conferences in the summer, Olivet College asks that the City' snoise ordinance is observed. 9am until 10pm is the time slot where noise can be made. How is it that I have been woke up by the Olivet High School band on three occasions this week before 8am. If the college must adhere to the cities ordinance than the high school should too. Ethically we cannot hold some community members to a higher than others.

Ethics

I would first like to introduce myself, I am a senior student at Olivet college with a double major in communications and sociology and anthropology. I am also a new columnist for the Echo. I will be writing on ethics and morals in the Echo. I am looking for feedback. Anyone who has an ethical issue they would like addressed in the Echo or simply on here is welcome to comment, blog, or email me.
The first step would be to ask, what is ethics? How does ethics fit into the college students lifestyle?
